| The
Issue
While the importance
of child safety is our highest priority, the issue and number of children
affected by these unspeakable crimes are not always known by the public.
Until a child you know becomes a victim, the reality of the current situation
is often ignored. But ignoring the data will not make it go away. And
unfortunately, most of the programs that alert the public to this ongoing
problem are announcements of a child who has been abducted or victimized.
We have made great strides in addressing this important issue, but so
much more needs to be done.
The following are
the current statistics on child exploitation.
Child Exploitation
Statistics
>
The odds of a child being sexually victimized before the age of 18 are
1-in-5 for girls and 1-in-10 for boys.
>
Child exploitation occurs in all income groups and cultural backgrounds.
>
The
majority of perpetrators are known by their victims.
>
Less than 33% of exploitation cases are reported by the child.
>
Children do not outgrow the traumatic effects of these unspeakable crimes.
