Prevention VS. Treatment

Each year, more than three million children are reported abused or neglected. Of this number, an average of three children per day die from the abuse or neglect. For those children who survive these unspeakable crimes, the total direct & indirect cost for treatment is approximately $94 billion per year. The cost to taxpayers and society continues to escalate because children who are abused, neglected or exploited are at high risk for school failure, drug addiction, juvenile crime, premature sexual activity, and welfare dependency.

“It is only by a massive investment in prevention that we can reasonably expect less suffering. Such an investment, while costly at first, will more than pay for itself in dollars saved for remedial services in special education, welfare, health, and the criminal justice system. In human terms, the savings simply defy calculation."

– Vanderbilt University Professor Isaac Prilleltensky

“The cost of prevention is lower than the cost of abuse treatment. For every dollar invested in prevention, there is a cost savings of four dollars to public agencies later on.”

– UC Santa Barbara Psychology Professor Daphne Bugental.
